Louis: a devil or a psychopath?

By Christiane Märker

July, 28th 2007

After Raoul's death Louis summons Christine to the palace. Now a scene follows which is fascinating and irritating.

Louis has dinner with Christine and tries to comfort her. But we know that it is Louis who is responsible for Raoul's death. In fact you need much callousness to first murder someone and to let his girlfriend believe that you feel sorry for her after that. When I think about this, I must admit that it shocks me. What Louis does here is really evil. And he continues. After the dinner he even wants to sleep with Christine. Now even if he wouldn't be responsible for Raoul's death, it would be completely tasteless to make a pass at a girl right after her boyfriend has died.

I think that this is actually the most worse thing that Louis does in the movie. The fact that has sent Philippe to prison is cruel, but also somehow understandable. Louis didn't know Philippe. He was a stranger for him and so he only saw the danger. And actually from an objective point of view Philippe was in fact a danger for Louis. So Louis was afraid of Philippe and did what he did. This is no excuse for his acting, but it makes it somehow understandable (from a human point of view). But what Louis does to Raoul and Christine is not understandable. There are no mitigating circumstances. And that's why I think that that what Louis does to Raoul and Christine is far more worse than what he does to Philippe.
And of course there's the question: How can someone be so evil? Because it really needs alot of evilness to act like Louis does it in this scene with Christine. Or is he maybe not evil. Is he maybe just mad. At the MITIM forum on imdb another fan mentioned that Louis shows many signs of a psychopath. And I agree with this fan. I'm not a psychologist and as this is just a movie and not reality, it also wouldn't make much sense to analyze Louis' character scientifically. But yet I was also thinking that it looks somehow psychopathic when Louis smiles so nicely at Christine while he knows exactly what he has done. It is so strange and irritating. Actually there are only these two possibilities. Either Louis is a little devil or he is a psychopath.

I tend to think that there's really something wrong with Louis' psyche, because one also gets the impression that he has now awareness of wrongdoing. He does these cruel things and it looks as if he thinks that it is alright what he does. I think that has also something to do with his education. Louis was educated to be king. And now he seems to think that everything in his country belongs to the king and that the king can take whatever he desires (also the girlfriend of another man). Obviously something has went deeply wrong with Louis' education. I think he has a complete twisted world view. So I think that on the one hand Louis has a psychopathic bent and on the other hand that his behaviour is also the result of a failed education (not a bad education, just one which has missed the aim).

Okay, that was my little try of a character analyze. I stop it here because that is all what I can say at the moment.
